Visit of the Commissioner of BAGAIA to the Minister of Maritime Economy 2020-09-21

The presentation by the Commissioner of BAGAIA (Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency) Eng. Charles Irekefe Erhueh to the Minister of Maritime Economy, Dr. Paulo Veiga, took place on September 18, at the premises of the respective Ministry, in Mindelo, São Vicente.

Eng. Erhueh, who was accompanied by IPIAAM Board of Directors, represented by Chairman Eng.º Mário Margarito Gomes and the Executive Director, Cmdr. António Duarte Monteiro, referred to the fundamental role of BAGAIA in the strengthening and collaboration between the Member States, namely, in terms of the prevention and investigation of accidents and incidents.

In this context, the Commissioner emphasized the fact that Cabo Verde has an two-modal institution such as IPIAAM, which, together with BAGAIA, has the important mission of ensuring compliance with the standards and recommendations of international bodies, such as ICAO and IMO.

In addition, according to Eng. Erhueh, investigation processes are the same either in the Aviation or Maritime as the case may be, but no accident or incident are the same.

At the meeting, the needs for training and technical qualification, financing and attract other nations to be part of this regional accident investigation agency were discussed.

In turn, the Minister of Maritime Economy, thanked the visit and the presentation by the Commissioner of BAGAIA, which allowed him to have a broader view of BAGAIA's mission and duties. He also praised the role that BAGAIA may have in cooperation between States, as well as the contribution of this regional agency, together with IPIAAM, to ensure safety in the aeronautical and maritime sectors in Cabo Verde.
