The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth´s surface and is essential for life on our planet. It supports global trade, regulates the climate, preserves biodiversity, and provides livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. Protecting these vital resources is fundamental to ensuring a sustainable future for present and future generations.
As the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for maritime safety and the prevention of pollution from ships, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) plays a key role in protecting the marine environment. Through international conventions, climate and ocean-related action, and global partnerships, the IMO works continuously to promote safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable shipping.
Over several decades, the IMO has developed and adopted binding international regulations, as well as recommendations and guidelines, aimed at reducing the impact of maritime activities on the marine environment and ensuring the preservation of the oceans.
Among the main IMO conventions and instruments dedicated to ocean protection are the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC) and the OPRC-HNS Protocol (2000), the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention), the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships´ Ballast Water and Sediments (Ballast Water Management Convention), the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention), the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), and the London Convention and Protocol.
