BAGAIA workshops on accident investigation 2022-11-17

IPIAAM is participating from November 14 to 18, 2022, in two workshops on the themes "Flight Recorders" and "The Role of Accident/Incident Investigation in the State Safety Programme (SSP), organized by the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA), in Abuja, Nigeria and the State of Cabo Verde is represented by IPIAAM, by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Eng º Mário Margarito Gomes and the Aeronautical Investigator, Eng.º Edmir Santiago.

According to the organization, these meetings aim to further deepen participants’ knowledge in understanding safety and the investigative processes, in order to expand stakeholders’ role during the investigation.

BAGAIA's commissioner, Charles Erhueh, saids the guest speakers will talk about partnering with the right stakeholders such as airport authority, military, police, national civil defense, among others, without forgetting the relationship with communities where the crash happened so as to inform them of their role, which by the way is most critical if we are to get good results.

He also showed up that, many times, when BAGAIA is invited to carry out any investigation, it is faced with constraints related to the channels of communications, which are slow and affected the speed at which the investigation would commence.

In turn, on behalf of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Nigeria, Muhammed Hashim, Director of Engineering, said that “when you talks of flight recorders, Nigeria has one of the best laboratories in the world.”

He then highlighted the exceptional work that Nigeria has been doing and referred a recent occurrence in Cameroon, where it was possible to retrieve information from the damaged recorder, because of the expertise of AIB-Nigeria and the existing cooperation between the AIB globally.

In addition to Cabo Verde, seven other Member States of BAGAIA are present at the meetings, namely, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
